🧬 Additional Trait Odds
I still remember sitting up at 2 a.m. with my laptop, trying to figure out what colors my Maine Coon’s next litter might actually turn out to be. I had a brown tabby sire and a silver dam, and every breeder forum I read gave me a different answer. That frustration is exactly why I built this tool. It’s a free Maine Coon color and genetics calculator that uses real Punnett-square genetics, not guesswork, to show you the most likely coat colors, patterns, and traits a litter could produce.
Whether you’re a breeder planning a pairing, or simply a curious owner wondering “what color will my kitten be,” this calculator gives you a clear, visual answer in seconds.
What This Cat Genetics Calculator Actually Does
Most kitten color calculators online give you a vague answer or just one possible outcome. This one is different. It works through nine separate genes, the same genes that real feline geneticists study, and runs the actual cross between your sire and dam for each one. Here’s what it covers:
Once you select each parent’s genotype, the calculator instantly shows you the top predicted colors with their probability percentages, along with color swatches so you can actually visualize the outcome, not just read a genotype code that means nothing to a casual owner.
How to Use the Maine Coon Color Calculator (Step by Step)
You don’t need a genetics degree to use this. Here’s exactly how it works:
- Select the Sire’s genotype for each gene. Dropdowns are written in plain language, not just genotype codes, so you can match your cat’s visible coat if you don’t know the exact genetics.
- Select the Dam’s genotype the same way.
- Results update automatically. The most likely kitten colors appear instantly, ranked by probability with color swatches.
- Check Additional Trait Odds at the bottom for white spotting, wide band, and polydactyl predictions — these layer on top of base color independently.

A Quick Genetics Lesson
If you’ve wondered why two black cats can produce an orange kitten, here’s the short answer. The red gene lives on the X chromosome. Males only have one X, so they’re either red or not. Females have two X chromosomes, meaning they can carry one red and one non-red gene simultaneously which is exactly what creates a tortoiseshell coat. That’s also why tortoiseshell males are so rare; it takes a genetic anomaly.
Dilution genes don’t add color, they soften it. Black becomes blue, red becomes cream which is why blue and cream Maine Coons aren’t separate colors genetically, just diluted versions of black and red.
